About Yaps

What is Yaps?
Yaps is an Australian-designed WiFi home phone for kids. It connects to your home WiFi and lets your child make voice calls to a list of contacts you've approved. No screen, no SIM card, no internet access, no apps. Just a phone.
How much does Yaps cost?
$149 AUD one-time purchase. Yaps-to-Yaps calls are free. Calls to regular phone numbers and international numbers are available as an optional add-on.
What age is Yaps designed for?
Yaps is designed for kids aged 5 to 12. It's particularly suited as a first phone for younger children who aren't ready for a mobile device.
Is Yaps available to buy now?
Yaps is currently in pre-order. We're launching with 100 founding families across Australia. Join the waitlist to secure your spot.
Where is Yaps designed?
Yaps is designed and built on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. We're an Australian company building for Australian families.
Does Yaps need a SIM card?
No. Yaps connects to your home WiFi network. There's no SIM card, no cellular connection, and no mobile data plan required.

How It Works

How does a WiFi phone work?
A WiFi phone makes voice calls over your home internet connection instead of a cellular network. You plug Yaps in, connect it to WiFi, and it works like a regular phone — but only calls the contacts you've approved.
Can my child call anyone?
No. Your child can only call numbers you've added to the approved contact list via the parent portal. Incoming calls are also restricted to approved numbers.
What is the parent portal?
A browser-based dashboard where you manage your child's contact list, set quiet hours, and view call history. No app download required — works from any phone, tablet, or computer.
What happens if the WiFi goes down?
If your home WiFi drops, Yaps won't be able to make or receive calls until the connection is restored. It's designed as a home phone, not a mobile device.
Are Yaps-to-Yaps calls really free?
Yes. Calls between two Yaps devices are always free, no matter how long. Calls to regular phone numbers require the optional calling add-on.

Safety & Privacy

Is Yaps safe for kids?
Yes. Yaps has no screen, no internet browser, no app store, no camera, and no messaging. The only thing it does is make voice calls to contacts you've approved. There is nothing for a child to access that you haven't explicitly allowed.
Can strangers call my child's Yaps?
No. Only numbers on your approved contact list can reach your child's Yaps. All other incoming calls are blocked.
Does Yaps collect my child's data?
Yaps stores the minimum data needed to operate: your contact list and call logs. We do not record calls, sell data, or share information with third parties. Full privacy policy available on our website.
Does Yaps have quiet hours?
Yes. You can set quiet hours through the parent portal (for example, 8pm to 7am). During quiet hours, the phone cannot make or receive calls.

Tin Can & Alternatives

Can I buy Tin Can Phone in Australia?
No. As of 2026, Tin Can Phone is only available in the United States. They have not announced an Australian launch date. Yaps is the Australian-designed alternative — same concept, built locally.
Is Yaps the same as Tin Can?
Similar concept, different companies. Both are WiFi home phones for kids with parent-approved contacts. Tin Can is US-based ($75 USD + $9.99/month). Yaps is Australian-designed ($149 AUD, Yaps-to-Yaps calls free).
What's the difference between a WiFi phone and a dumb phone?
A WiFi phone (like Yaps) plugs into your home and makes calls over WiFi. It has no screen and no mobile capability. A dumb phone (like Nokia 3210 or KidComms) is a mobile phone with basic calling/texting and sometimes basic internet. WiFi phones are better for younger kids who don't need to call from outside the house.
What are the alternatives to giving kids a smartphone in Australia?
Options include: WiFi home phones (Yaps), feature/dumb phones (KidComms, Nokia), smartwatches (Spacetalk), and managed smartphones (Opel, Pinwheel). See our complete comparison guide for details.
Is there a phone for kids with no internet in Australia?
Yes. Yaps is a WiFi home phone with zero internet access. KidComms also offers a basic mobile phone without internet. See our full guide for all options.

Pricing & Plans

Is there a monthly fee for Yaps?
Yaps-to-Yaps calls are free with no monthly fee. Calls to regular phone numbers (mobiles, landlines) require an optional calling add-on.
How does Yaps compare on price to other kids phones?
Yaps is $149 AUD one-time. Compare: KidComms $95 + SIM, Spacetalk $299-349 + $5.99/mo + SIM, Nokia 3210 $79 + SIM. Yaps has the lowest ongoing cost because WiFi calling has no per-minute charges.
Do I need to buy a separate router or internet plan?
No. Yaps works with your existing home WiFi. Any standard Australian broadband connection (NBN, 5G home, etc.) is sufficient.
