NO SIM

NO SIM. NO PLAN. NO INTERNET.

A no-SIM phone for kids makes calls using WiFi instead of a mobile network. Without a SIM card there is no mobile data, no cellular internet, and no ability to access websites or social media — only the contacts a parent has approved. In Australia, Yaps is the only phone built on this model.

Zero Internet Access No Monthly Plan Parent-Controlled Contacts WiFi Calls Only

The Logic

WHY NO SIM?

A SIM card connects a device to a mobile network. A mobile network provides internet access — even on phones marketed as "basic" or "dumb." That means any phone with a SIM card in it has some level of internet connectivity, regardless of how simple the device looks on the outside.

If the goal is giving your child a phone with zero internet access, the most reliable way to achieve that is to remove the SIM entirely. No SIM means no mobile network connection. No mobile network means no mobile internet. The risk is not managed or filtered — it is eliminated at the hardware level.

A phone without a SIM card cannot access the mobile internet. Period.
No browser to restrict. No data connection to monitor. No workaround to discover.

How It Works

HOW WIFI PHONES
WORK INSTEAD

01

Connects to Home WiFi

The phone connects to your existing home WiFi network — the same one your laptop, tablet, and smart TV already use. No additional hardware or networking equipment required.

02

Calls Over Your Internet

Voice calls travel over your home internet connection using VoIP technology. There is no additional monthly cost for the phone itself — you are already paying for the internet connection it uses.

03

Parent Controls the Contacts

You decide who your child can call and who can call them. The approved contact list is managed through a browser-based portal on your own phone or computer. No app download needed.

Think of it as a landline that your child controls — but you decide who is in the phonebook.

Important Context

WHAT ABOUT
EMERGENCIES?

This is the most common question parents ask about WiFi phones, and it deserves a direct answer.

WiFi phones cannot call 000 (emergency services) directly. Emergency calls in Australia require a cellular connection — a SIM card and a mobile network. This is a technical limitation of any WiFi-only device, not specific to Yaps.

If your child is at home, they can reach you or any approved contact immediately through the Yaps device. For emergencies, they are in the same house as an adult who has a mobile phone capable of calling 000.

For situations where your child is outside the home and needs emergency contact capability, a dumb phone or GPS smartwatch with a SIM card is the appropriate device. WiFi home phones are designed for home use — they provide communication independence within the safety of the household, not out-of-home emergency coverage.

Common Questions

FREQUENTLY ASKED
QUESTIONS

Does my child need a SIM card to make phone calls?

No — not if the phone connects to WiFi. WiFi home phones like Yaps use your existing home internet connection to make voice calls. No SIM card is required, no mobile plan is needed, and there is no way for the device to access the mobile internet. Your child can call any approved contact directly from the device.

How does a phone work without a SIM?

A WiFi home phone connects to your home WiFi network — the same network your laptop and tablet use. Voice calls are transmitted over that internet connection using VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) technology. The parent sets up an approved contact list through a browser-based portal. The child picks up the phone, selects a contact, and the call connects. No SIM card, no mobile network, no cellular signal required.

Can a WiFi phone call mobile numbers?

Yes. Yaps-to-Yaps calls (between two Yaps devices) are free and included. Calling external numbers — mobiles, landlines, and other phones — is available as an optional add-on for a small monthly fee. The calls are routed from your WiFi connection to the phone network, so the person you are calling does not need any special equipment or a Yaps device of their own.

Is a no-SIM phone safe for kids?

A WiFi home phone without a SIM card is the safest phone category available for children. With no SIM, there is no mobile internet access — not even basic browsing. With no screen, there are no apps, no games, no social media, and no camera. The parent controls the entire contact list. The only thing the child can do is make and receive voice calls with people the parent has approved. For children aged 5 to 10 who are mainly at home, it provides communication independence with zero digital risk.
